The minimal synth genre originated at the turn of the 1970s and 1980s as one of the subspecies of new wave. In contrast to the more commercial synth-pop, minimal synth was characterized by low-quality sound, the dark mood of tracks and ascetic arrangements using analog, often self-made synthesizers. The genre gained a second life in the late 2000s, when a new generation of musicians performing minimal synths appeared, and a number of the genre's classic albums were reissued.
